COVID-19 in 2025: A Global Health Snapshot

COVID-19 in 2025: A Global Health Snapshot

As of September 2025, COVID-19 continues to influence global health landscapes, albeit in a transformed manner. While widespread lockdowns have become a thing of the past, the virus remains active, with periodic surges and ongoing public health efforts.

Global Epidemiological Trends

  • Increased SARS-CoV-2 Activity: The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a test positivity rate of 11% across 73 countries as of May 2025, indicating a rise in SARS-CoV-2 activity to levels not seen since July 2024. This uptick suggests a resurgence of the virus in various regions. World Health Organization

  • Hospitalization Data: Between August 4 and August 31, 2025, WHO reported 9,429 new COVID-19 hospitalizations and 355 new ICU admissions across 34 countries. Notably, 13 countries from the Americas and Europe showed an increasing trend in hospitalizations during this period.

Vaccine Policy Shifts

  • U.S. Advisory Panel's New Stance: In a significant policy shift, the U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., voted to end the universal recommendation for COVID-19 vaccinations. Instead, the committee advocates for "shared clinical decision-making," allowing individuals to consult healthcare providers about vaccination, particularly for those over 65 or with underlying health conditions.

  • Insurance Coverage: Despite the change in federal guidance, insurance groups have indicated that they plan to continue covering COVID-19 vaccines through 2026, ensuring access for those who choose to get vaccinated.

Variant Evolution and Surveillance

  • Emerging Variants: The UK is experiencing a rise in cases due to the "Stratus" variant, which includes subvariants XFG and XFG.3. While this variant has a slightly increased ability to evade immune responses, it does not appear to cause more severe illness than previous strains. A distinctive symptom associated with Stratus is hoarseness or a raspy voice. World Health Organization

  • Global Surveillance: WHO continues to monitor SARS-CoV-2 activity through sentinel surveillance sites, providing data on test positivity rates and emerging variants to inform public health responses. World Health Organization

Impact in Pakistan

  • Resurgence in Cases: Pakistan is experiencing a notable resurgence of COVID-19, with the test positivity rate reaching 17% in April 2025, one of the highest in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This resurgence has led to increased hospitalizations and concerns about healthcare capacity.

  • Public Health Response: The Pakistani government and health authorities are intensifying efforts to control the spread of the virus, including promoting vaccination campaigns and public health measures.

Looking Ahead

As we move further into 2025, the global community faces the ongoing challenge of managing COVID-19. While vaccines and treatments have significantly reduced the severity of the disease, the virus's persistence underscores the need for continued vigilance, adaptation of public health strategies, and global cooperation to mitigate its impact.
